Why Is My AC Not Blowing Cold Air?

June 24, 2019

There is nothing worse than having a broken AC when it is smoldering outside. As the temperature continues to rise it is important to make sure your AC is running properly and efficiently. If your AC is not as cold as it used to be, it is blowing hot air, or you electric bill is higher than it has ever been; you may have one of the following issues:

An Ice Buildup

You could be experiencing an ice buildup if you have dirty coils or filters, or a lack of refrigerant. First try to clean the coils and replace filter. The improved airflow should help melt the ice. Run the unit on fan mode to melt ice completely. If problems continue contact a HVAC technician.

A Power Issue

This may sound simple, but first make sure the unit has power. Check the fuses or circuits in the electrical panel. Because Air Conditioners require such large amounts of power, it is possible your unit blew a fuse or tripped a breaker. If any of the switches are set to “off”, you may have a problem with your air conditioner.

Dirty Filters That Need to Be Changed

You always want to make sure your changing your filters regularly, but especially in the summer to ensure you are getting the cleanest, coldest air. If the filter gets too dirty, airflow is blocked and the unit will freeze (as mentioned earlier).

A Refrigerant Leak

A common reason for a lack of cold air is often a refrigerant leak. Wear and tear can cause small holes in the coils, which may cause the refrigerant to leak out. The system should be checked and then a recharge of the system will need to be done, in order to get your AC up and going again. This should be done by a professional ASAP. Breathing refrigerant is hazardous to your health.. You may have this problem if your AC is hissing, the vents are blowing warm air, your house feels humid, your electric bill is suddenly higher, or frost is forming on the unit outside.

Your Unit is Too Small or Old and Needs to be Replaced

Depending on the issues you are experiencing, it may just be time to replace your unit, especially if your unit is older than 15 years.

Contact an HVAC professional if your AC is blowing hot air, breaking down constantly, making weird sounds, or is producing unpleasant smells. We can get your AC back and running, or advise what system would be best for your home, before the next heat wave hits!
